Hvar Island is the sunniest island in the Adriatic and a true paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts. In May the pleasant spring temperatures are ideal for exploring the island. See which are the top sights along the Tour de Hvar race distances.
1. The UNESCO-listed Stari Grad plain

Stari Grad is one of Europe’s oldest towns, known for its cobblestone streets, Tvrdalj Castle, and a scenic waterfront. It’s also surrounded by the historic UNESCO-listed Stari Grad Plain with its green landscapes of vineyards and olive groves, rich in heritage.
The town serves as the hub for our Saturday races, as both 13 km and 22 km races will start and finish there. On Sunday, the 40 km and 65 km races will also begin from the town center.
2. The island's highest peak and ridge – Sv. Nikola

At 626 meters, Sv. Nikola is the highest peak on Hvar Island, offering panoramic views of the Adriatic and nearby islands. A popular spot for hikers, its trails wind through lush Mediterranean landscapes, leading to a peaceful summit with a small chapel.
We recommend visiting it as a scenic hiking excursion, especially for runners on the 13 km and 22 km distances, as their race routes do not pass through this spot. Only the 40 km and 65 km courses lead to the top.
3. The lively ancient capital – Hvar Town

Hvar town was founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC and is also home to Europe’s oldest public theatre, still active today. Visit the Fortica Fortress for panoramic views, enjoy the town’s restaurants and bars, relax on pristine beaches, or explore the nearby Pakleni Islands.
The town is the main venue for the entire Tour de Hvar event. On Friday, you will collect your bib numbers, start the Friday Vertical Run there and it will host children’s runs. Additionally, it will host the finish line for the longest distances – 40 km and 65 km.
4. Views of the Pakleni Islands

One of the most iconic sights of Hvar Island is undoubtedly the Pakleni Islands, located just off the coast of Hvar Town. Known for their crystal-clear waters, hidden coves, and lush greenery, these islands are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on secluded beaches.
You’ll have the chance to admire them from three different race routes: during Friday’s Vertical Run to Napoleon Fortress and on Sunday’s long-distance courses (40 km and 65 km).
5. Adriatic coastline and beaches

All race routes offer beautiful views of the Adriatic coastline and surrounding islands. One of the highlights is Dubovica Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters. In May, the sea temperature reaches nearly 20°C, which is ideal for a refreshing post-run dip.
On the 40 km and 65 km courses, you’ll pass several breathtaking beaches where you can cool off during the race, or visit at your leisure before or after the event.
6. The aromatic lavender fields in bloom

The island has long been famous for its fragrant lavender fields, which blanket the hillsides in vibrant purple. The best time to experience their beauty is in May, when the lavender blooms, offering a stunning visual and aromatic delight.
On Hvar, the lavender fields are mainly to be found in the Stari Grad Plain and around Pitve, Zastražišće and Malo Grablje. Almost all of these areas are covered by our race routes.
7. Fortica fortress at sunset

The Fortica Fortress, built in the 16th century, stands proudly above Hvar town, offering sweeping views of the island and the Adriatic Sea. Originally constructed to defend against pirates, it remains one of the island’s most significant historical landmarks.
It’s a highlight featured in both Sunday routes (40 km and 65 km), but it’s also central to the Friday Vertical Race, where participants climb to the fortress at sunset.
